50 Jahre Schülerwettbewerb
Schülerwettbewerbe gibt es (fast) wie Sand am Meer, doch nur wenige können auf eine so lange Geschichte zurückblicken wie der Wettbewerb „Die Deutschen und ihre Nachbarn im Osten“ aus Baden-Württemberg: Schon seit 1970 wird er jährlich vom Innen- und dem Kultusministerium ausgeschrieben. Seit fünf Jahrzehnten stellt er Fragen und Aufgaben zu den Beziehungen zwischen dem deutschen Südwesten und dem östlichen Europa. Antworten und Lösungen kommen von Kunst- und Deutschkursen, aus dem Geschichts-, Geografie- und Gemeinschaftskunde-Unterricht oder von engagierten Einzelschülerinnen und -schülern.
Leider erlauben es die aktuellen Umstände nicht, dieses Jubiläum mit Veranstaltungen in größerem Rahmen zu feiern. Stattdessen bieten wir hier Einblicke hinter die Kulissen des Wettbewerbs, und Beteiligte von früher und von heute teilen mit, was sie über den Wettbewerb denken.

Warum machen Schülerinnen und Schüler eigentlich beim Wettbewerb mit? Wie gefallen ihnen die Preise und was nehmen sie persönlich für sich mit? Hier kommen Schülerinnen zu Wort, die mehr als einmal Preise beim Schülerwettbewerb gewonnen haben.
Zu Beginn des Schuljahres kommen oft schon Anfragen nach den neuen Wettbewerbsbroschüren. Es gibt Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, die schon seit vielen Jahren mit ihren Schülerinnen und Schülern beim Wettbewerb mitmachen. Was die Gründe für treue Teilnahme sind, davon berichten drei Lehrkräfte.
Alle zwei Jahre wird der Schülerwettbewerb gemeinsam mit einem Partnerland durchgeführt. Eine erste Kontaktaufnahme findet meist über zwei Jahre vor der eigentlichen Durchführung des Wettbewerbs statt. Wie sehen unsere Partner im Rückblick die Zusammenarbeit an dem Projekt Schülerwettbewerb?
Stimmen aus Ungarn, Polen und Tschechien
Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen: Wer denkt sich die Aufgaben für den Wettbewerb aus? Wer bewertet sie? Ein Gremium aus Lehrerinnen und Lehrern unterschiedlicher Schulformen, die die Fächer Deutsch, Geschichte, Gemeinschaftskunde, Geografie, Religion und Kunst unterrichten, beginnt ab Herbst des Vorjahres mit der Entwicklung der Aufgaben für den Schülerwettbewerb. Nach dem Einsendeschluss werden die eingesandten Arbeiten von demselben Gremium bewertet.

Deutschland, der Osten und Europa: Die Entwicklung des Schülerwettbewerbs von 1970 bis heute
Im Dezember 1967 beschloss der Landtag, künftig einen Schülerwettbewerb mit gesamtdeutschen und osteuropäischen Themen durchzuführen. Die erste Preisverleihung fand im Juni 1970 in der Villa Reitzenstein statt. Damals organisierte noch der Landesverband des Bundes der Vertriebenen den Wettbewerb.
Diese Aufgabe ging dann 1987 auf das Haus der Heimat des Landes Baden-Württemberg über. Zur reinen Fragebogenform kam bald ein bildnerischer Wettbewerbsteil, der Kreativität forderte. Anlässlich des 40. Jahrestags seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden auch zeitgeschichtliche Fragestellungen in den Wettbewerb aufgenommen, die mit unterschiedlichen Textarten zu lösen sind.
Über das vergangene halbe Jahrhundert hinweg haben sich auch die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte verlagert. Themen, die das Verhältnis zwischen der BRD und der DDR aufgriffen, verschwanden mit der Mauer. Mit dem neuen Namen „Die Deutschen und ihre Nachbarn im Osten“ steht seit 1993 in der Regel jeweils eines der östlichen Nachbarländer im Mittelpunkt des Wettbewerbs.
2012 lenkt der Slogan „Gemeinsam in Europa“ den Blick auf das Verbindende, auf die gemeinsame Geschichte und Gegenwart. Der Fokus liegt dabei weiterhin auf den Beziehungen zwischen dem Südwesten und Regionen oder Ländern im östlichen Europa.
Seit Ende der 1990er Jahre führt das Haus der Heimat den Schülerwettbewerb alle zwei Jahre gemeinsam mit einem Partnerland durch. Dabei richten sich die Aufgaben zugleich an deutsche und an osteuropäische Schüler. Bis vor drei Jahren lösten die Teilnehmer länderspezifische Aufgaben, dann änderte das Haus der Heimat das Konzept: Jetzt werden die gleichen Fragen gestellt, jeweils aus ländervergleichendem Blickwinkel betrachtet – das Verbindende steht damit stärker im Vordergrund.
Weiter entwickelt hat sich auch der Radius der Hauptpreisträgerreise. Standen zu Beginn nur Reiseziele in der BRD, eine Zonengrenzfahrt inklusive, auf dem Programm, kamen nach der Wende die neuen Bundesländer sowie Polen, Ungarn Tschechien und die Baltischen Länder hinzu. Die Preisträgerreise führt die deutschen Schülerinnen und Schüler gen Osten, die Osteuropäer nach Baden-Württemberg. Seit 2015 bilden gemeinsame Reisetage beider Gruppen mit (abschließender) Preisverleihung in Stuttgart den Höhepunkt. Vermittlung von historischem Wissen und der direkte Kontakt von Jugendlichen über Staatengrenzen hinweg – beides dient dem Ziel des Wettbewerbs: die Stärkung der gesamteuropäischen Idee.
Seit 2014 ist das Team des Schülerwettbewerbs auch mit einer sogenannten „Kleinen Preisverleihung“ in Baden-Württemberg unterwegs und würdigt Schulen mit besonders vielen Gewinnerinnen und Gewinnern durch Feiern in deren eigenen Räumen.
Als Einstieg in den Wettbewerb bietet das HdH BW seit 2015 begleitende Workshops an, die entweder an den Schulen oder im Haus der Heimat in Stuttgart durchgeführt werden. Das Angebot wächst stetig und wird auch über den Wettbewerb hinaus zur Vorbereitung auf Klassenfahrten, als Ergänzung zum Themenkomplex „Europa“ in der Mittelstufe oder für Projekttage und -wochen gebucht. 2020 wird es den Workshop erstmals online in rein virtueller Form geben.
Im vergangenen Schuljahr war Ungarn das Partnerland von Baden-Württemberg, 2021/22 soll es Rumänien sein. Aber der Fachbereich „Interkulturelle Jugendbildung“ im Haus der Heimat denkt schon weiter. In Zukunft könnte man, aufbauend auf einem Netzwerk an Schulen im östlichen Europa, länderübergreifend und multinational kooperieren. Das eröffnet dem Schülerwettbewerb für die kommenden Jahrzehnte neue Möglichkeiten.
